The Hopkinsville-Christian County Planning Commission, dba Community and Development Services (CDS), seeks to employ a Principal Planner.

The position requires :

  1. A Master’s Degree in Planning, Public Administration, Community Development or related field with at least five (5) years of experience in Planning or Community Development, OR
  2. A Bachelor’s Degree in Planning, Public Administration, Community Development, or related field, with at least seven (7) years of experience in Planning or Community Development, AND
  3. The acquiring of an AICP certification within two (2) years of employment.

Applicants should possess excellent oral and written communication skills, demonstrate initiative and cooperation in a fast-paced working environment, and have the ability to perform detailed research pertaining to urban planning and community development. The successful applicant will be responsible for drafting long-range plans, ordinances, regulations and guidelines governing growth and development within both municipal and county jurisdictions as well as administrative planning activities. Necessary skill sets include analytical reasoning, critical thinking, project administration, comprehensive planning, mapping, and the ability to work independently as well as in a group setting.

The salary is based upon both education and experience with a salary range from $50,000 to $70,000 and a hiring range from $50,000 to $60,000. There is a competitive fringe package available. Community Information: Located in southwestern Kentucky, Hopkinsville is the seat of Christian County, and has a population of roughly 30,000 while Christian County’s population is approximately 72,000. Christian County is the second largest county in Kentucky by land mass and shares the Fort Campbell Army Installation, home of the 101st Airborne Division, with our neighboring state of Tennessee. Hopkinsville is located within an approximate one-hour drive of several metropolitan areas including Bowling Green, Paducah and Owensboro in Kentucky as well as Nashville in Tennessee. Community and Development Services, an agency of the City of Hopkinsville and the County of Christian, Kentucky, has an opening for an intermediate level planning position. The position requires:

  1. A Master’s Degree in Planning, Public Administration, Community Development or related field with at least three (3) years of experience in Planning or Community Development.
  2. A Bachelor’s Degree in Planning, Public Administration, Community Development, or related field, with at least five (5) years of experience in Planning or Community Development.
  3. The acquiring of an AICP certification within five (5) years of employment.

The position will be responsible for a combination of administrative, intermediate and long range planning activities. The salary is based upon both education and experience with a salary range from $40,000 to $65,000 and the hiring range from $40,000 to $50,000. There is a competitive fringe package available.
